Understanding Middlesex County Releases
A release from Middlesex County custody is an event tied to one custodian. At the Middlesex Jail & House of Correction, that event might be bail, personal recognizance, a court order, expiration of a county sentence, parole from an eligible sentence, or a transfer. A transfer to the Massachusetts Department of Correction, another jail, or immigration custody ends the Sheriff's immediate custody but does not mean the person returned home. The record needs both the legal release type and the destination.
State and federal facilities use other records. A sentenced state prisoner may leave through sentence expiration, parole, or a court-directed release. A person leaving Federal Medical Center Devens is tracked by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The terms below help separate events that often look alike.

Middlesex County Release Paths
The phrase “released inmate” does not reveal where a person went. The Sheriff's record, DOC certificate, BOP result, and court docket each document a different part of the path. Use the source that controlled the last custody.

A person can also remain on probation or supervised release after the gate event. Those later obligations do not change the actual date custody ended, but they prevent “released” from meaning that every form of legal control has ended.
Note: A release date without a type or destination cannot distinguish return to the community from a transfer between authorities.
Middlesex County Release Record Fields
A narrow request should identify the person and ask for fields that settle the custody question. The Q3 2025 Chapter 126 report proves that Middlesex keeps release-event data, but its public rows are anonymized and delayed. They do not name a person or show a destination. A named Sheriff's request is the stronger route.

The official quarterly table includes PCF, SID, OBTN, admit type, release date, earned-time days, sentence length, and jail credit. It omits name, photo, release reason, release time, and destination. Treat it as a historical dataset, not a current Middlesex County release lookup.
Request Middlesex County Release Records
The Middlesex Sheriff's Office lists Records Access Officer Megan McLatchey in its Legal Division. Email publicrecords@sdm.state.ma.us or call 781-960-2830. The page lists 12 Gill Street, Suite 4700, Woburn, but its ZIP code is inconsistent across page elements, so confirm the ZIP before sending paper mail.
- Give the full name, aliases, date of birth if known, identifiers, and a narrow admission-date range.
- Ask for the booking or admission record, actual release date and time, legal release type, and destination or receiving agency.
- Request electronic copies and all reasonably segregable nonexempt parts. Identify a booking photo separately if it is needed.
- Keep the request focused. Ask first for date, type, and destination when the main goal is custody confirmation.
- Review the response for exemptions, an itemized cost, anticipated production, and appeal information.
Under M.G.L. c.66, §10, a records access officer must respond within ten business days to a reasonably described request. Black-and-white copies are capped at five cents per page. Labor rules and extension periods depend on the public body, and no flat MSO booking-photo fee is published. Obtain an estimate before paying.
Middlesex County Release Record Law
Massachusetts defines public records broadly in M.G.L. c.4, §7(26), including documentary material and photographs made or received by government. Exemptions can protect private, medical, investigative, juvenile, security, sealed, and expunged material. An agency should still produce nonexempt portions that can be separated from protected content.
Middlesex-specific retention is substantial. The March 2026 statewide schedule lists commitment and discharge logs and indexes, plus fingerprint-card and photo records, as permanent in electronic form. Other central case records are kept for six years before electronic transfer, while property records are kept for three years after final release and then electronically. Retention means a formal record may survive a live-screen disappearance. It does not guarantee public disclosure.
A sealed or impounded case may disappear from public court access. Expungement is different: it destroys the covered official record when granted under the applicable process.
Note: Record retention can support a later request, but it does not override an exemption, sealing order, or lawful redaction.
Middlesex County Bail Release Timing
Middlesex has a distinctive same-day bail procedure. The Sheriff's posting-bail instructions say the person posting bail must reach the Visiting Center between 6:30 and 7 p.m., arrive no later than 7 p.m., bring cash, and show government-issued photo identification. The window applies every day of the week.
Payment is a release mechanism, not proof of the final exit time. The Sheriff does not publish how long processing takes or guarantee discharge by an hour. Call 978-667-1711 and use extension 0 after 4 p.m. or on weekends, then obtain the release record if a durable answer is needed.

Middlesex Release Property and Funds
Property and account funds can remain unresolved after custody ends. The MSO Canteen and Property instructions allow a formerly incarcerated person to retrieve property by weekday appointment with 24 hours' notice. A documented designee may use the Property Release Form or a notarized letter. The property number is 978-932-3153.
Remaining account money is not collected at the facility. The former person calls 978-667-1711 and uses a listed Canteen extension, gives a correct mailing address, and receives a check in their own name. These steps concern property and funds, not proof of custody status. The retention schedule separately shows why release records may persist after both the live view and property issue are gone.
Note: Property pickup and a mailed account check are post-custody tasks; neither one proves the legal type of release.
Find a Middlesex County Release
Start with jurisdiction, not a broad name search. Middlesex County includes the Sheriff's jail, Massachusetts state prisons, and a federal prison. Each uses a different release route, and no public Sheriff name roster or recent-release feed was identified.
- Identify the last custodian from prior correspondence, a booking identifier, a commitment number, a BOP register number, or the court case.
- For Billerica jail custody, call 978-667-1711 for current routing and send a focused MSO release-record request for historical proof.
- For a Massachusetts prison, check the official current DOC-fed VINE route, then request the DOC discharge certificate and computation record if the person is no longer shown.
- For FMC Devens or another federal prison, search the BOP locator. Use ICE ODLS only for immigration custody.
- Read the court disposition and any parole or probation record, then reconcile the release date with the destination.
A missing live result does not prove community release. It can reflect transfer, spelling, identifier, age, sealing, a different custodian, or system delay.

Middlesex State Release Search Limits
Massachusetts does not offer a verified public historical DOC profile that permanently shows “Released/Discharged,” a photo, a release date, a supervising office, or an internal Projected Release Date. The official state prison locator page routes users to VINE for someone currently held by MA DOC. It requires a full first and last name or commitment number, and phone access is available at 866-277-7477.

The state prison gateway capture shows the current-custody route and its scope. It must not be described as a county-jail roster or a complete former-prisoner archive.
If a matching former prisoner is absent, request the Certificate of Discharge/Release, sentence listing, date computation, actual physical release date, type, and destination from DOC.

Middlesex County Recent Release Records
No official Middlesex Sheriff current-custody name lookup, 24-hour list, 72-hour list, booking-photo roster, or jail-information app was identified in the July 23, 2026 sweep. The Sheriff site map, forms, jail pages, and agency channels do not supply a named recent-release feed. Social pages and press releases are agency news, not a roster.
The Chapter 126 quarterly report is the closest official public dataset, but it is anonymized and historical. It shows release dates and sentence-credit data without names, release reasons, times, photos, or destinations. A same-day or three-day inquiry should name the date range and person in a written MSO request. Switch to MA DOC, BOP, or ICE when the receiving authority indicates a transfer.
Middlesex Release Supervision Records
Parole and probation answer different questions. Parole is conditional release under the Massachusetts Parole Board. Probation comes from the sentencing court and may follow confinement or stand on its own. Massachusetts has no public statewide name search for every parolee or probationer. Public life-sentence decisions are a narrow exception, while an individual parole record generally requires the person's authorization.
Use the criminal docket for a probation order and later events. For parole, check a public life-case decision when applicable, obtain authorization for a protected individual record, and contact the correct Board office for routing. Region 6 is based at 33 East Merrimack Street in Lowell, but its location does not prove every Middlesex address is assigned there. Always pair supervision information with the jail or DOC physical-release record.
Middlesex Release Transition Units
Middlesex has two distinctive in-custody transition programs. The Sheriff's Women's Pre-Release Center opened in 2021 with a sentence-end and family-engagement focus. The Older Adult Re-Entry Unit opened in October 2024 for incarcerated men age 55 and older. Both can support preparation, but residence in either unit remains custody.
After a person reaches the community, official Community Justice Support Centers operate in Framingham, Lowell, and Woburn. Those Massachusetts Probation Service and Office of Community Corrections locations are community resources. They do not convert a pre-release placement into discharge, and the Lowell center's co-location with Parole Region 6 does not merge parole with probation.
Middlesex Release Court Search
Middlesex criminal cases are spread among twelve District Court locations and Superior Court sessions in Woburn and Lowell. Remote MassCourts access usually requires the exact criminal docket number; the official name-search route is for civil cases. A failed name search is therefore weak evidence about custody or release.
Use the arresting municipality, court department, division, date, and court papers to recover the docket number. A courthouse public terminal and the clerk can provide broader designated public access. The docket may explain a dismissal, plea, sentence, time-served decision, probation order, release order, or later violation. It still may not show the physical jail exit time, which belongs in the custodian's release record.

Middlesex Release or ICE Transfer
The ICE Boston ERO check-in office at 1000 District Avenue in Burlington is within Middlesex County, but it is not a detention facility. Massachusetts guidance also explains that a federal civil immigration detainer alone does not give state or local officers authority to hold a person. ICE can separately assume custody, so the practical question is whether another custodian received the person.
The ICE Online Detainee Locator covers current detainees and certain releases from ICE custody within the prior 60 days. Search with a nine-digit A-number and country of birth, or exact biographical details. A transfer from Billerica to ICE is not a confirmed community release. ODLS delays, exclusions, exact-match errors, and its limited window also mean that no result is not final proof.
Middlesex Prison Closures and Transfers
MCI-Concord stopped holding people on June 30, 2024 after 146 years, and about 300 people were reclassified and reassigned. South Middlesex Correctional Center ceased custody operations in 2021. MCI-Shirley's former minimum and pre-release units also closed while its medium-security prison remained active.
These closures create a local false signal: “not at that prison” may describe an internal DOC move rather than a release. Search the current statewide custody route or request the movement and discharge record. The official MCI-Concord redevelopment page documents the closure context.

Match the source to the last custodian and the exact question. Current custody, historical release, court authority, and supervision are separate facts.
- Middlesex Sheriff
- Use for county jail custody and named release records. No public name roster or recent-release feed was identified.
- MA DOC and VINE
- Use for participating current state-prison custody. No verified persistent historical discharge profile exists.
- MassCourts
- Use for disposition, sentence, probation, and court orders. It is not the physical release timestamp.
- Parole Board
- Use for public life decisions and authorized individual records. A favorable decision is not the gate event.
- BOP locator
- Use for a federal release date and status. Another custody or supervision term may continue.
- ICE ODLS
- Use for current and certain recent immigration records. Its released-person window and coverage are limited.
A strong Middlesex release finding states what each source proved and what remained uncertain. The custodian's record should supply the exit type and destination before a missing current-custody result is described as community release.
Middlesex County Release Facilities
The current facility map contains two Sheriff's components, three Massachusetts DOC prisons, and one federal prison. The correct release proof follows the operator, not merely the Middlesex County location.
- Middlesex Jail & House of Correction: use the MSO release record, court docket, and receiving agency if transferred.
- Middlesex Sheriff's Office Women's Pre-Release Center: use MSO and court confirmation because pre-release placement is still custody.
- MCI-Framingham: use the DOC, court, or civil-commitment record that matches the person's legal status.
- MCI-Shirley: use the DOC discharge certificate, parole record when applicable, and court docket.
- Northeastern Correctional Center: use the DOC discharge record; minimum or pre-release custody is not discharge.
- Federal Medical Center Devens: use the BOP locator and federal court record.
Closed institutions are not added as current facility pages. Municipal lockups are short-term arrest-processing locations rather than county correctional release archives.
